One of the ways I get inspiration, is finding weird things at the thrift store. A few weeks ago, I saw this big checkers mat made out of fabric, with extra large game pieces. I thought it would be really cool to put it outside somewhere for people to play.
I loosely sewed it onto one of the tables in the park in Mount Vernon by the Washington Memorial. It’s a nice place, where people walk their dogs, talk, and read. One time I saw a woman writing postcards!
I sewed little Velcro patches onto each of the squares, and adhered an opposing patch to the bottom of each game piece.
I haven’t been back to see if it’s still there, but I really hope that some people took advantage of it.
Would you stop to play a game of checkers in an unexpected place?
