The saying goes, ‘be the change you want to see in the world’, and these words are very true. It might seem like an individual can’t do much, but the truth is you can make more of an impact than you even realize, even if it’s just to a handful of people. This is so important, and you could make a big difference to someone, whether that be supporting them through a difficult time or inspiring them to achieve their goals and help others as well. If you want to make a change in the lives of others, here are 3 ways you can do that.

1. Make Time for the Ones You Love

This is a simple place to start if you want to make a positive change to the ones around you. It is easy to get caught up in work or personal circumstances, and time moves by quickly. Not only is it beneficial to you to spend more time with the people that you love, but it’s an opportunity to catch up with them and to make sure that they are OK too. A lot of people might not be forthcoming when they are going through a hard time, and making an effort to listen and ask them how they are doing can make a big difference to them. It will allow them the opportunity to tell you if they need your support, or you could even serve as a positive distraction when they need one. This can provide them with some relief but also show them that they are loved and supported.

2. Volunteering

If you want to help those who are outside of your family and friendship circles, volunteering is an excellent way to do this. Charities rely on volunteers to help them with fundraising and to raise awareness for their cause. You could volunteer at a charity shop on weekends for a few hours or help to run a coffee morning at your local community center. Perhaps you could spend time with senior citizens who are lonely, speaking with them on the phone and visiting them at home once a week. Volunteering for crisis helplines is also an option, as well as many other roles you could explore to find something suitable for you.

3. Fostering

Another way you can make a huge difference in someone’s life is by becoming a foster parent. There are many children in need of supporting and loving homes that are in the social care system, and you could be the perfect person for the job. It is a big responsibility, but the bonds you make with your foster children will last a lifetime. You can help them flourish, achieve their goals and realize their self-worth. Contact your local fostering agency to learn more about this process and see if it could be right for you.

If you wish to make a difference in the lives of others and bring about some positive change for your local community and beyond, consider the suggestions above and think about how you can get involved. Not only will this make a big difference to others, but it’s an opportunity for self-growth for you as well.
