Monday Mailings

Monday Mailings

by Uncustomary | May 12, 2014 | Snail Mail

There’s nothing like a mail social to reignite your love of mail. On Thursday, I joined a bunch of enthusiastic and creative ladies at the National Postal Museum for the monthly mail social. We used the generous supplies provided for us to write letters and make...

Snail Mail Social: Holiday Edition

by Uncustomary | Dec 14, 2013 | Snail Mail

I mentioned that the Postal Museum in DC is hosting a snail mail social on the second Thursday of every month, and since it’s December, this month’s was holiday themed! Lots of people came, some with their own cards to decorate and some ready to make cards...

As I’ve mentioned, on Sunday, I got to go to the Postal Museum in DC. The Inverted Jenny stamp was re-released, and it turned into a giant party. I’ve never seen so many people in that museum, but it makes sense! Not only could you get first day release...

I was 4 when I had my first dance recital. 🩰 For I was 4 when I had my first dance recital. 🩰

For ballet, I wore a purple tutu and we were flowers blooming to classical music for the first time in the spring. 🧑‍🩰

🩷🖤 For tap, we danced to the Pink Panther theme song. We had pink and black striped outfits complete with a furry black headband and tail. 🐈‍⬛ (That's why my hair looks like that. It's a headband.)

Inexplicably, in the middle of the tap number, we all did a somersault. 🤸🏻‍♀️ They had these big pads in the middle of the stage that we had to dance around, just so we didn't hurt ourselves during that one move.

Before we got to the somersault, my tail fell off. 😲

I remembered the instructions we had received in dress rehearsal: no matter what happens, keep dancing. The show must go on. 🎭

So I picked up my tail, and I held it to my butt. For the rest of the number. Including when we did the somersault. 💪

After the performance, I ran down the hallway to see my parents. 😆 My dad was smiling so wide, trying not to laugh. I jumped in his arms and yelled, "Did you see me? Did you see me? My tail fell off, but I kept it on!"

He laughed and said he did see and he was very proud of me. Looking back, I can tell that smile was because I was a resilient, weird little girl. That would grow up into a weird, resilient adult. 👯‍♂️

Those pictures were printed on keychains. 🗝️ My mom and grandma had one. On the back of Nannie's (pictured here with me, my Da, and my first dance recital flowers) it said "I love grandma".

When she died, I took it back and now it's on my keychain. 🔑

Most things I do, I do for her. Not my grandma. That little girl in the photo. 🧒🏻

Your tail might fall off. Just keep dancing. 💃🏻

Writing a story about 🥤 magical rootbeer, 🚗 roadsi Writing a story about 🥤 magical rootbeer, 🚗 roadside attractions, and 🎠 finding wonder in the world got me thinking about innocence.

Like... 🤔 what even is innocence? 🧸 And what are we truly craving when we wish we had it back/didn't lose it in the first place?

I have some 💛 thoughts and 💛 theories and potential 💛 tips for what we can do to regain that sense of 💫 the simple life.
