How Contributing to Coastal Safety Can Improve Your Sense of Purpose

by | Sep 9, 2024 | How To | 0 comments

Our coastlines are more than just beautiful stretches of sand and sea; they are bustling hubs of activity where people come together to relax, play, and enjoy nature. However, with the pleasures of the beach come the inevitable risks of the ocean. Each year, thousands of lives are saved by coastal safety programs and initiatives, many of which rely on the support of volunteers, donations, and community involvement. Contributing to coastal safety can not only make a tangible difference in keeping beachgoers safe but also provide individuals with a profound sense of purpose.

One way to contribute to these efforts is through initiatives, which fund essential services such as lifeguard training and equipment purchases. By participating in or supporting such efforts, individuals can help protect others while also finding deeper personal fulfillment.

The Role of Coastal Safety in the Community

Coastal safety is a cornerstone of community health, particularly in countries like Australia, where beach culture is deeply ingrained in daily life. Lifeguards, patrols, rescue services, and education campaigns all play vital roles in keeping beaches safe for the millions of people who visit each year. Behind these efforts are the individuals and organizations dedicated to maintaining these safety nets.

However, coastal safety is not just the responsibility of lifeguards or trained professionals. It is a collective effort that involves everyone—from volunteers educating children about the dangers of rip currents to locals keeping beaches clean and hazard-free. Every contribution, big or small, adds to the overall safety and well-being of coastal areas. For those involved, this contribution can also lead to a powerful sense of purpose, knowing that their efforts have a direct impact on the lives of others.

A Pathway to Personal Fulfillment

Finding a sense of purpose in life is something many people strive for, and contributing to coastal safety can be a meaningful way to achieve that. Whether you’re someone looking to give back to the community, engage in environmental protection, or simply help others stay safe, coastal safety initiatives offer an opportunity to make a tangible difference.

Helping Others and Saving Lives

There’s no greater sense of purpose than knowing that your efforts are helping to save lives. Coastal safety programs, like those run by Surf Life Saving Australia, directly contribute to reducing accidents and drownings. Lifeguards and volunteers trained through these programs are responsible for thousands of rescues each year, ensuring that families and individuals can enjoy the beach safely.

For those involved, there’s an undeniable sense of fulfillment in knowing that you’ve played a role in making the beach a safer place. Whether you’re volunteering your time, raising awareness about water safety, or participating in fundraising activities, the knowledge that your actions could prevent a tragedy provides a deep sense of purpose that few other activities can offer.

Creating a Sense of Community

Another way contributing to coastal safety can improve your sense of purpose is by fostering a connection with your community. Volunteering or supporting local coastal safety efforts allows you to work alongside like-minded individuals who share your commitment to keeping beaches safe. This creates a sense of belonging and connection that can be incredibly fulfilling.

By working with others toward a common goal, you also become part of something bigger than yourself. Whether you’re helping organize safety drills, participating in beach clean-ups, or educating others on water safety, these shared experiences help strengthen bonds within the community and create a collective sense of responsibility.

Developing New Skills and Gaining Confidence

Contributing to coastal safety is not just about helping others; it’s also an opportunity for personal growth. Many coastal safety initiatives offer training and skill development that can enhance your own abilities, both in and out of the water. Lifesaving courses, first aid training, and public speaking opportunities provide invaluable skills that you can carry with you throughout life.

Lifeguard and First Aid Training

Many coastal safety programs, such as Surf Life Saving, offer comprehensive training in water rescues, CPR, and first aid. These skills not only equip you to help others in an emergency but also boost your own confidence in your abilities. Knowing how to act decisively in critical situations gives you the self-assurance that you can make a difference when it matters most.

Moreover, these skills are transferable to other aspects of life, enhancing your capacity to care for those around you, whether at work, at home, or in your community.

Leadership and Teamwork

Contributing to coastal safety often involves working in teams, whether you’re on patrol as a lifeguard, coordinating a beach event, or participating in public safety campaigns. Through these experiences, you can develop strong leadership and teamwork skills, learning how to collaborate with others, manage responsibilities, and lead by example. These are valuable life skills that can improve both your personal and professional life.

Environmental Stewardship: Protecting the Coastline

Coastal safety goes beyond rescuing swimmers in distress—it also involves protecting and preserving the coastal environment. Beach erosion, pollution, and climate change all pose significant threats to the safety and sustainability of our coastlines. By contributing to environmental efforts aimed at preserving coastal ecosystems, you are playing an essential role in ensuring that these natural resources are available for future generations.

Participating in Beach Clean-Ups

One simple yet impactful way to contribute to coastal safety and environmental protection is by participating in beach clean-ups. Removing litter, plastic, and other debris from the shore not only protects marine life but also reduces hazards for beachgoers. A clean beach is a safer beach, and by taking part in clean-up efforts, you contribute to the overall well-being of the coastline.

Advocating for Environmental Policies

If you’re passionate about protecting the coast, you can also advocate for policies that promote coastal sustainability. Supporting measures that address pollution, manage coastal development, and mitigate the effects of climate change can ensure that our beaches remain safe and beautiful for generations to come. Being an advocate for coastal protection adds another layer of purpose to your efforts.

Encouraging Others to Get Involved

One of the most powerful aspects of contributing to coastal safety is the opportunity to inspire others to take action. As you become more involved in these efforts, you may find yourself encouraging friends, family, or even strangers to get involved in the cause. Whether it’s through sharing your experiences, participating in community events, or raising awareness on social media, your passion for coastal safety can spark a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same.

When you encourage others to join you in contributing to coastal safety, you create a larger network of people working toward the same goal. This collective effort amplifies the impact, making a real difference in the safety and sustainability of our beaches.

Finding Purpose Through Contribution

Contributing to coastal safety offers a unique and powerful way to improve your sense of purpose. Whether through direct involvement in rescue efforts, environmental protection, or fundraising initiatives like Surf Life Saving Lotteries, your efforts help protect lives and preserve our coastlines for future generations. The fulfillment that comes from knowing you’re making a difference, combined with the skills and connections you gain, creates a profound sense of purpose that can enrich your life in countless ways.

By dedicating time, resources, or expertise to coastal safety, you not only protect others but also cultivate a deeper connection to your community and the environment. In doing so, you contribute to a cause larger than yourself—one that has a lasting, positive impact on the world.

In Columbia, Maryland, there’s a former grocery store that has been transformed into a department store for mythical creatures, time travelers, and intergalactic tourists.

It’s called DoodleHATCH.

You can groom a unicorn, visit an intergalactic space station, climb onto a giant’s bed, meet guinea pigs, explore an artist’s studio, and discover approximately a million other things that somebody actually sat down and made.

It’s a nonprofit interactive art museum, a community project, an educational resource, and one of my favorite places I’ve ever discovered.

And it could be demolished as part of a proposed redevelopment of the Long Reach Village Center.

But there’s still an opportunity to help.

You don’t need to donate money. You don’t need to live in Maryland. And you don’t need to know anything about zoning laws.

You can start by writing an email.

🚨 Here's what's happening

Developer Columbia Concepts has proposed redeveloping the Long Reach Village Center in Columbia, Maryland.

The proposal would replace existing buildings with new housing, recreational facilities, and other development.

Unfortunately, that puts a whole collection of existing community resources at risk of being demolished, including:

  • DoodleHATCH Interactive Art Museum
  • Maryland Fashion Institute
  • A makerspace used for community education
  • Local restaurants, shops, and service businesses
  • Early childhood education and community programs
  • A 140-foot-long mural created by approximately 100 community members

This isn’t just about losing a fabulous museum. It’s about losing an entire collection of places that people have built, supported, and relied on.

And there’s another possibility!

🌈 Meet The REALM

Lee Andersen, the founder of DoodleHATCH, and her nonprofit ManneqART want to preserve the existing community resources and transform the village center into an arts and culture destination called The REALM.

Imagine a place where artists have studios, children have room to explore, students can learn creative skills, people can attend performances, and local businesses continue serving their neighbors.

There are plans for a performing arts space, more opportunities for artists, and a Witches Kitchen that might serve you a horrible-disgusting breakfast.

Which, personally, I think sounds promising.

The people behind DoodleHATCH are gathering support to oppose the developer’s zoning proposal and advocate for The REALM.

And they’d love your help.

💌 How to help in about two minutes

If you live in Howard County, Maryland

If you’re 18 or older, DoodleHATCH is asking eligible county residents to visit the museum and sign their petition in person.

📍DoodleHATCH Interactive Art Museum

8775 Cloudleap Court, Unit 101
Columbia, MD 21045

⏱️ Museum hours: Friday–Sunday, 10 AM–5 PM.

And while you’re there, I highly recommend exploring the museum. Bring someone who needs a reminder that being an adult doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying ridiculous things.

If you don't live in Howard County

You can still help!

🐹 Wait. What exactly is DoodleHATCH?

I’m so glad you asked.

DoodleHATCH is an interactive art museum in Columbia, Maryland, created by artist, designer, and professional generator of wildly ambitious ideas, Lee Andersen.

The museum is designed as a pretend department store for mythological creatures, time travelers, and galactic tourists.

There are dozens of installations, and unlike most museums, you’re encouraged to touch things, explore, and participate.

There’s also an artist’s studio full of fabric and handmade garments, workshops, special events, birthday parties, free books, and opportunities for local artists to share their work.

The museum welcomes families and children, but adults are absolutely allowed to enjoy themselves, too.

And the woman behind it has spent decades bringing creativity into the community through fashion, festivals, education, and public art.

I discovered DoodleHATCH in 2020 and loved it so much that I started volunteering.

I’ve been back multiple times, and there are still things I haven’t seen.

That’s part of what makes it special. You can keep discovering things because people keep creating them.

You don't have to live near DoodleHATCH to care about it.

There are Merriment Makers everywhere.

People turning empty buildings into art spaces. People organizing parades. People teaching kids how to sew, paint, dance, or build things. People putting enormous amounts of time into projects that make their communities more interesting.

Sometimes they’re running nonprofits. Sometimes they’re working out of their garages. Sometimes they’re making something weird in a strip mall that you might drive past a hundred times without realizing what’s inside.

I hope you’ll help protect DoodleHATCH.

And I hope you’ll look around your own community, too. Visit the strange little museum. Go to the local art show. Find the person who makes giant puppets or organizes an absurd annual festival. Spend your money at the independent shop with the handmade things.

There are people everywhere creating reasons for us to be curious about being alive.

I’d like them to be able to keep doing that.

Help save DoodleHATCH. Help protect The REALM. Help keep the world interesting.
