🗒️ I was an extremely enthusiastic student with a surprisingly elaborate system for hiding how much I was struggling.

Which is a pretty good introduction to the rest of my childhood, actually. 🩷🧡💛💚🩵💜

👩🏻‍⚕️ I went to a gynecologist who asked me a ques 👩🏻‍⚕️ I went to a gynecologist who asked me a question I couldn't answer...

She wanted to know whether what I was feeling was pressure or pain.

I had spent decades dealing with pain, years going to doctors, and felt worse after surgeries that were supposed to make me feel better. 🩺

I assumed it was pressure. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But what if everything I thought was pressure was actually pain and I was just used to this as my new baseline?

That question in that appointment became my inspiration for the opening in my book. ❤️‍🩹 The essay is aptly titled "Pressure Or Pain?" and I start trying to untangble some of the things I've accepted as normal, just because they were a part of my life for so long. And whether I've been doing that with the rest of my life as well. 🤦🏻‍♀️

📖 “Pain or Pleasure” is part of The 1 in 10,000 Girl, my collection of 52 essays about a statistically improbable life.

📣 Most people only root for you at the beginning w 📣 Most people only root for you at the beginning when you start or the end when you finish but you don’t need the cheering then you need it in the messy middles.

You don’t come to me for advice on the good days. You come because things feel heavy, hopeless, and exhausting + you need someone who actually gets it. Someone who’s been there & still wakes up every day and says, ‘Okay, here we go'. 😮‍💨

You don’t need a teacher who’s naturally cheerful, never been cracked open by trauma, & has joy come easy. 🚫

You want someone who’s wrestled with depression, self-destruction, 12 mental health diagnoses, cancer scares & chronic pain ... and still learned how to make a life full of color, fun, & weirdness. 🍌🦄

Happiness has never been handed to me. Every piece of joy I live is the result of trial, error, therapy, treatment, rituals, mischief, & relentless curiosity. 🧪 That means every tool I share with you is one I’ve had to fight for myself.

If you see me playful, expressive, free, creative, or confident, I want you to know that wasn’t magic. It was work. And if I can learn it, you can too. That’s why my work exists. 👑
