While you may not be able to jump a train through Europe or cruise the Carribean just yet due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are still so many safe options for checking out on some R&R. And what better way to social distance and vacation than booking your first solo travel experience to a nearby city.

Travelling alone can be daunting, but it can also be a genuinely amazing experience. Getting up the nerve to book your first solo trip is often the hardest thing about it, and once you’ve taken the plunge you’ll often find that the experience itself is completely different to how you had imagined, and probably one of the most rewarding things you will ever do.

Travelling solo as a woman is empowering and fantastic. It can be a great way to feel independent and boost your confidence but it does come with some particular challenges. If you are planning on taking the bold step towards solo adventure, firstly, you go girl! Secondly, take a look below at some of the best advice and things to keep in mind when planning your first solo trip.

Be confident

That said, don’t be afraid to be confident! Travelling solo takes confidence, and giving off an air of self-reliance and a can-do attitude is manifestation at its finest. You’ll meet new, interesting people. Be confident but be aware of your surroundings. Take it all in and be present.

Have a Plan B

Travelling solo is an exciting experience, but when you are on the road things don’t always go to plan, and it can be hard to readjust your plans if things do go sideways. Ensure that in the case of emergencies, you’ve always got a backup. Stash some emergency money in your sock, have directions to your hotel written down, and stay one step ahead. Finally, keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to divert from Plan A or B.

Double check everything

At every stage you should be checking your plans. If you are going to fly, check your tickets (and your passport!), your hotel booking, and how to get where you need to go at the other end. If you’re planning to road trip, be sure to print direction where cell service might be limited and make sure your car is serviced and you have enough gas. It all sounds so basic but traveling alone means you’ll be flying solo for a bit and why not mitigate any potential risks before hand. Checking things twice only takes a few seconds, and can save you stress and hassle later on.

Take only what you need

Travelling light is a key part of travelling solo. You’ll find you are more flexible, and more able to take advantage of the opportunities that come up if you aren’t worrying about carrying tons of luggage around. While your phone is a necessity while traveling- resist the urge to have it out at all times. Traveling solo means you get to meet new people, make new friends. Having your phone out says you don’t want to be bothered.

Enjoy it!

Traveling solo can become addicting. It’s like getting your first tattoo. How many people only have one tattoo; right? Take every opportunity to get out and wander the streets of where you are, strike up conversations with new people, and most of all, relax, and keep an open mind.
