Get Messy Art Journal | Uncustomary Art Self Portrait

For this month’s prompt, we were to do a self portrait. The only rules were that we couldn’t use an actual photo of ourselves. So how would I demonstrate to someone who has never met me who I am? It actually got me thinking.

At this point, I identify with the name Uncustomary more than I do with Mary. It’s not just who I want to be, it’s who I’m becoming. It’s actually a shame I didn’t realize this sooner. But 26 isn’t too late in life. In fact, there is no such thing as “too late in life”. The same way we can choose to start our day over at any point (even at 11:30 pm!), we can choose to change our life’s course at any age.

So I definitely wanted to include the word/name/identity “Uncustomary”. I decided to take some of the confetti off of my wall (I easily could have made more, but these circles are more a part of me than new ones) and just add my name to them. Gold glitter is something that I’ve grown into with ease, and it only seems right to use that as a medium. Super simple.

The other page I have for you today is a mermaid fin made out of sequins. The sequins is haphazard, colorful, shiny. The shapes aren’t necessarily themed, and some repeat. But they all fit inside of this mermaid fin. I think that’s a pretty damn good metaphor for me; for Uncustomary. And the fin is surrounded by crazy sparkly tinsel.

I’m just a ball of beautiful nonsense, floating along in this gorgeous crazy world. It’s the only way I want it.

Plus, it’s not an art journal till you have trouble closing it, right? 😉
