30 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day | Uncustomaryst

Happy Earth Day! Previously, I celebrated by getting a group of my friends to help me take over an abandoned lot in Baltimore with some guerrilla gardening. It always feels so amazing to nurture the planet we live on. It surely is quite a location for our residence. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty grateful to call this blue and green planet my home– and I’m happy to share it with all of you!

Holidays are a reminder for us to check in with the occasion. Halloween reminds us to embrace our imagination and child-like sense of wonder and play. New Year’s reminds us to check in with our goals and personal progress to see what we want to accomplish in our lifetime. Valentine’s Day reminds us to celebrate the love we have in our lives. All of these holidays can get commercialized, overdone, and played out. It’s up to us to fight for the magic in them and use them as gentle reminders to celebrate every single day.

Christmas is a great time for donating money and volunteering our time, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only time of year we need to give back. Earth Day reminds us to nurture our planet, to take care of it while we’re here for the next generations. We don’t want the movie “Idiocracy” to come true, right? Let’s never start watering our plants with Gatorade and recycling. We have to take care of this environment and do our part to make it a (still) beautiful place to live.

Here are 30 ways you can celebrate Earth Day, on April 22nd or all year round:

  • Do some guerrilla gardening in your city, to add a pop of nature and color to a place that really needs it
  • Restructure the disposal systems in your home (create easy recycling processes in common rooms)
  • Go to a park and do a nature scavenger hunt, search for different types of rocks, leaves, plants, etc.
  • Create art (or crafts) out of recycled materials
  • Spend an hour or more in your house with absolutely no (or extremely minimal electricity), and definitely turn things off when you leave the house (bonus points for unplugging things!)
  • Fix leaky faucets at home and at work
  • Wear green
  • Donate to EarthDay.org
  • Bike, walk, or use public transportation– basically minimize your car usage, even if that just means carpooling with an extra person
  • Spend time outside! Go hiking, swimming, play with sidewalk chalk, have a picnic
  • Start a community (or personal) garden where people (or just you) can plant vegetables, herbs, etc. which you can use for cooking
  • Go paperless with your bills, receipts, and anything else you can
  • Go to a Farmer’s Market and buy local, fresh food

30 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day | Uncustomary

  • Make a birdhouse or bird feeder for the bids at your house or at a local park
  • Organize a clean-up in a local area to pick up litter
  • Re-purpose an abandoned lot
  • Use a water bottle you can wash instead of plastic ones
  • Put a suction cup sand timer in your shower so you can keep track of how long you’re using water (and definitely choose showers over baths)
  • Use a reusable shopping/tote bag
  • Make outfits out of recyclable materials and have a fashion show
  • Read about how to reduce your carbon footprint
  • Talk to a child about how to celebrate Earth Day
  • Make a mandala out of natural things you find
  • Learn about the Earth and how it works
  • Study global warming
  • Put rain barrels outside to collect water which you can later use to water your plants
  • Visit a botanical garden
  • Send someone seeds in the mail as a present
  • Take a ride on an electric bicycle
  • Change out your light bulbs to the energy-efficient kind

Here’s a video I made a couple years ago when I went to the park to celebrate Earth Day on my own.
