Self-Love Prompts: What Is The Best Compliment You’ve Ever Received?
Self-Love Prompts is a series I started after creating a list of 50 self-love writing prompts. People like you select a prompt that speaks to them, work on it, and send me their response so I can share it with you guys!
We’re continuing on this series with Claire. I’m excited to have her contributing to this series by answering the prompt, “What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?”
What Is The Best Compliment You’ve Ever Received?
I’ll start at the beginning. I was born as a wee thing with a cleft lip and palette. I can only assume my parents were panicked and devastated. They did everything they could to find me the best doctors, which they did. Growing up from birth with facial scars is not exactly an easy task at any age.
I did ok as a child, but at age 14, I was asked by a friend to join her on a double date, which would be a blind date for me. Wow, my first date! What made me say HELL NO and slam down the phone? My “friend” said to me, “don’t worry, I *warned* him about your scars.”
My self-esteem was done. No one would want me now. That was the moment I realized that I could not be pretty. Of course, time goes on, I grew up, came to love my uniqueness, and love the way I look.
So what is my point in all of that? The best compliment I have ever received comes after being told I am beautiful, to which I counter “even with the scars?” Here comes the compliment: “I don’t even see them.”
